DON/Nurse Manger Series: MDS Management

Even though the MDS has been used for more than a decade, it poses unique challenges for the clinical departments of long term care facilities particularly the nursing department. Does the staff incorporate effective RAI systems and processes into daily practice? Is the staff knowledgeable and adhering to the State of Wisconsin and CMS regulatory requirements related to reimbursement and compliance? This session provides an overview for the Director of Nursing related to the practice supervision of MDS communication systems. The areas that will be addressed include: Standards+ RAI components for Medicare, Medicaid, CMI, assessment, RAPs, care plan, use of therapy, Medicare B, Restorative, ADL, ARD management and so many more key components from the MDS Manual. The most weighted aspect of success is that of communication. This presentation focuses also on the technological communication systems within the MDS system that are significantly under utilized. These technological systems provide beneficial additional support and time saving processes for a facility. Most providers have “avoidable” errors within their technology system that can add to their vulnerability and exposure that they may not be aware of. The systems reviewed in this presentation include: QI/QM, NH Compare, 5 Star Rating, MDS Submission reports, UB-04, Care Tracker and Point Right.(FREE MDS SUPPORT GROUP MEETS AGAIN OCTOBER 13th FROM 3-5:30PM)

Course Summary:
Even after a few years of Medicaid Case Mix, we are still learning that accurate completion of this crucial tool is essential to a facility’s financial survival. This session will provide a targeted overview of the RUGs III 34 Group or 44 Grouper Classification System with Medicaid implications. In addition, critical areas including Part B therapy utilization, ADL/mood coding and timing of the assessments will be covered in this session.

Course Objectives:

At the completion of this session participants should be able to:

• Predict uses of the MDS data by the DOJ, OIG, FBI and MFU.
• Identify MDS items used to calculate RUGs III groups and how this affects Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement.
• Relate two ways to ensure appropriate reimbursement by improving accuracy of MDS coding.
• Select residents that would benefit from specialized therapy intervention through Medicare Part B.
• Indicate the RAI requirement for a restorative nursing program.
• Describe the link between case-mix classification and Medicaid payment.
• Explain potential documentation requirements for the reimbursement systems.
