April 7th: F371 for the Dietitian and Staff

It is important to understand the rationale behind F371. This session reviews the basic concepts of food safety, especially contamination and cross-contamination. F371 is reviewed and other aspects that may be challenging to meet are discussed. Practical approaches to following F371 in the kitchen, serving areas, dining rooms and resident rooms are discussed.

Even after a few years of Medicaid Case Mix, we are still learning that accurate completion of this crucial clinical tool is essential to a facility’s financial survival. This session will provide a targeted overview of the RUGs III Group Classification System with Medicaid implications. In addition, critical areas including Part B therapy utilization, ADL/mood coding and timing of the assessments will be covered in this session.

In December 2008, new Conditions of Participation were published for Hospice providers. These new guidelines discussed the need for a collaborative relationship between Hospice and SNF caring for Hospice residents. In addition, new guidelines for F309 which went into effect March 31, 2009 provide clarification in this relationship. This impacts how you obtain orders, pain management strategies and how you create a collaborative care plan for the resident. This workshop will examine these changes and help the Nursing Home Administrator understand what needs to change in their processes to meet the new Hospice guidelines and the clarification of F309.

To Use or Not To Use the ABN….and which one should I use?

Questions continue to arise in what Advanced Beneficiary Notice should I give to residents. New regulations have also impacted the confusion with a new ABN for Part B services. This workshop will demonstrate the ABN process for both Part A and Part B Skilled Nursing Facilities. We will also discuss whether the Quality Improvement Organization Expedited Review process takes the place of the ABN.
