The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) implemented the new Five-Star Quality Rating System on December 18, 2008. The process has caused confusion and anxiety for many facilities. It is difficult to understand the process by which CMS is calculating the number of Stars. In addition, the staffing calculation is now based on the acuity level of residents. This workshop will give you an overview of the program, provide specific examples of survey and staffing calculations and show you strategies you can put into place in your facility to improve your rating. This is a must see workshop for all of your management staff.
At the completion of this workshop, each participation should be able to:
* Analysze the compononets of each "peformance measure" of the scoring system.
* Discuss the scoring rules for each area of health inspection, staffing and QMs.
* Determine how to calculate their staffing by acuity.
* Identify strategies to improve the facility's score
This workshop is essential for each facility. Our one price allows you to have all your managers in one room for one small price.

The program will include topics that have been challenging for DONs, including management techniques, personnel management, financial management and those areas of management that can’t be taught in school. The series, beginning in January 2009 can be purchased as a single session if your DON or Manager just needs an update or enhancement in one or two areas. However, if you have a new DON/Nurse Manager that needs experience, it is suggested that you purchase the whole 12 month series. Effectively ensuring that residents receive the benefits and services necessary for Medicare PPS and Medicaid is the objective of any SNF. To ensure this outcome, it is imperative that communication between Therapy and Nursing Staff is timely and effective to understand the complex and individual needs of each resident, to establish the correct Assessment Reference Date (ARD), to provide the needed care and services based on individualized resident assessments, to correctly document the skilled services being provided, and to have in place the needed equipment and education upon discharge to maximize resident success in the community.

January 30th: Get Ready for the MDS 3.0! Part 1: Interviewing Skills
10:00am – 12:00pm
Presenters: Pat Boyer & Terry Nelson
Cost: $250.00 per facility for the webinar
$ 99.00 at the training center
The new MDS 3.0 is expected to be finalized in early 2009 and implemented October 1, 2009. One of the biggest changes in this new MDS is the emphasis on utilizing direct interview items to consistently elicit the resident voice. The interview process asks residents directly about how they feel and their preferences. Initial pilots have shown that even the dementia resident can respond adequately to most of the interview questions. This workshop will give participants interview techniques to help them be successful with this new tool. Participants will be able to take this information immediately back to their facilities for improved accuracy and validity of their MDSs.
